Mountain View Miniature White Galloway Cattle Our Miniature White Galloway cattle are very small even when they reach maturity. This, coupled with the fact that they are specifically bred for their docile nature and their good looks, means our miniature cattle remain cute long after they grow out of being just cute calves! Mountain View Miniature White Galloway cattle are an attractive, easy care addition to any property. They are perfect for people on small acreage and first time livestock owners. If you can look after big dogs and have five acres you could quite easily run two of our Miniature White Galloway steers. Galloways We chose Miniature Galloways because they have all the good qualities of the standard Galloway with all the added benefits of the reduced size. We chose the white colouring because the White Galloways are relatively rare and because with the black and dun points they look great in the paddock. White Galloways are listed as a rare breed and we believe it is important to ensure that future generations get the opportunity to fall in love with these beautiful bovines too. But don't be taken in just by the cute factor - this breed has real commercial value for the large scale commercial cattle breeder too. You might choose a Galloway because: 1. Fertility. Galloway bulls are very fertile at an early age. If you want your cows in calf – the Galloway is the bull for the job. 2. Ease of Calving. The Galloway calf is very vigorous at birth which helps it to survive those crucial first few days of life. Make sure of your calving ease by using a Galloway Bull. 3. Maternal Traits & Longevity. Galloway females are very protective of their calves and will produce a live viable calf well into their teens. They produce a high quality milk and will look after their calves in all conditions. 4. Non-Selective Grazers. Research in Europe has shown that Galloways will graze over the whole paddock which allows the grasses to be able to compete with the weeds. 5. High Quality & High Yielding Carcasses. The typical Galloways carcass is well muscled, long and with optimum fat cover. Rarely does a Galloway cross have too much fat cover. 6. Produce High Quality Healthy Beef. In Canada, USA and Switzerland research has shown that beef which is extensively produced can be of great benefit in a healthy diet. Galloway beef raised under extensive conditions is rich in linoleic acid. 7. The Breed to Cross Breed. Galloway females are highly suited to joining with other breeds, with their easy-calving, good mothering and ability to do well in any conditions. Miniature Galloways Currently Miniature Galloway females can mature at no more than 120 cm and males at a maximum of 124 cm. At 12 months Miniature Galloway females must not be over 107.5 cm and 112.5 cm for males. (With our Whitelines and Wee Whites we are aiming for 100 cm and less at maturity.)

Dusty - day dreaming away. She hasn't got a clue how gorgeous she is yet! Our Full Blood Miniature White Galloway Herd Our original full blood females were predominantly from the very successful, well known Castle Douglas Galloway bloodline. Wanting to inject some ‘new blood’ we are now using straws from a magnificent full blood Miniature White Galloway bull from New Zealand. This bull, effectionately known as Hi Ho, along with our full blood females is helping to build a new Miniature White Galloway bloodline in Australia. We already have two heifers from this bull. In October 2009 we had our first calf from one of these Hi Ho heifers and Cannon Boy, a Prue Bred white Galloway bull from NSW, in Australia. The calf was a perfectly marked Pure Bred heifer. The experience of building our little herd of full blood Miniature White Galloways has been so satisfying. In early 2010, we were quietly looking forward to what the future may bring when we were fortunate to be given first offer on some beautiful, full blood miniature stud breeding cattle. We have now settled in eight new full blood Castle Douglas Miniature Galloway cows and two young bulls. Many of these cows have now calved to a small, black pure bred, miniature bull. Three bulls, two heifers and counting. We will keep you posted on their progress. Given a choice we would choose Galloways again and again. It has been our experience that the miniature Galloway is the most gentle and affectionate in nature of all the different breeds of miniature cattle. Our Wee Whites & Whitelines Wee Whites and Whitelines are what we call our ‘designer cattle‘. These are not a separate breed, but our own Mountain View Galloway breeding lines. Miniature White Galloways were not the smallest or the most readily available of the miniature cattle breeds in Australia when we started out. We wanted to build our herd up, reduce the size of the individual miniatures and retain all the good qualities of the Miniature White Galloway. So... after much research and a few trials we have found that by joining full blood Miniature White Galloways with certain other small, full blood or pure bred miniature cattle, the perfect combination of both breeds is the result. Everything that is great about a Miniature White Galloway, only smaller. We call the smaller Miniature White Galloway cattle that we have bred using another pure bred or full blood miniature cattle breed - Wee Whites and Whitelines (Miniature White Galloways with another smaller miniature breed in their breeding background). As our breeding program progresses, the progeny of these Mountain View Miniature Galloway cattle, the breeding line that we now call Wee Whites and Whitelines, will eventually qualify to be registered as Pure Bred Miniature White Galloways. This will take at least of five generations. From what we have seen so far it will be well worth the time, the effort and the expense. |
